MIRI, Aug 14: SMK Long Lama will represent Sarawak at the national level after emerging as the Overall Champion of the Sarawak State-Level STEM Project-Based Learning (PBL) Competition, highlighting the growing potential of rural students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
School principal Peter Limbau Empir said the achievement reflected the school’s sustained efforts to nurture students’ interest in STEM while providing them with opportunities to develop their creativity and talents through various competitions.
“Our success on July 18 is clear evidence that SMK Long Lama emerged as the overall champion of the Sarawak State-Level PBL competition,” he said when met at the SMK Long Lama Academic Carnival, which was officiated by Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau here today as reported by TVS.
He said the school had also recently emerged as the state-level champion in a competition related to the Educational Television Programme (TVPSS), earning it the opportunity to represent Sarawak at the national level.
According to Peter, the achievements were in line with the objectives of the three-day SMK Long Lama Academic Carnival, which aimed to increase students’ awareness of STEM fields while helping them chart their future educational pathways.
He said exposure to programmes and competitions at the district, state and national levels was important in identifying and nurturing new talent, particularly among rural students who might have fewer opportunities to explore emerging fields.
“We also want to showcase new talents whenever there are competitions at the district, state or national levels.
“We hope they will develop an interest and eventually plan to pursue further studies in fields that match their respective strengths and areas of excellence,” he said.
Peter added that the experience gained through the carnival and various competitions also enabled students to enhance their creativity and identify fields that best matched their interests and potential.
He said SMK Long Lama’s achievements demonstrated that rural schools were equally capable of producing students with strong talent and potential, while providing them with a platform to compete at the national level and bring recognition to Sarawak. — DayakDaily
