KUCHING, July 12: Members of SMK Batu Lintang’s Red Crescent and St John Ambulance proved that fun learning is not impossible during the Covid-19 pandemic as they conducted an Online First Aid Telematch via Zoom on July 10.

A total of 119 participants joined the telematch which consisted of 10 stations focused on learning about the first aid kit, fractures, wounds, poisoning, strains/sprains, burns and choking.

Station leaders prepared their games via quizzes, a 2-Truths-1-Lie game, 3D virtual experience, puzzles, word games and PowerPoint slides.

The Favourite Station Leaders Award went to Liew Ming Hui, Pamela Bong Siek Sze, Tan Chia Sin and Khoo Yue Ling.

Head Section Leader (HSL) of Red Crescent Youth Unit No. 19, under Stampin District, Joel Pang Kai Chen expressed his heartfelt gratitude over the success of the telematch.

“There were some hiccups here and there but overall I’m very satisfied. This event was bold but we managed to pull it off, all thanks to the passionate committee. I couldn’t have done all this alone and the responses from the students really made it all worth it,” he said in a statement issued recently.

Meanwhile, the school leader of St John Ambulance, 4th Cadet Combined Division and 11th Adult Combined Division, Geraldine Liew Jia Xing, lauded the organising committee members for their hard work.

“Seeing everyone squeezing their brain juice to think of an interesting game since it’s conducted online, it’s very hard but they all did very well. I am glad that we had this chance to collaborate and I was very excited when Joel asked me about it. Thank you guys for everything, it’s a dream come true. I’ll never forget this day,” she said.

Even though face-to-face learning has shifted online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the students’ motivation and spirit remain undeterred.

Student-led online co-curricular activities are still as ubiquitous as ever, with students fully taking advantage of the world wide web.

The teacher-in-charge of St John Ambulance, Loo Zia Hoay said such wonderful initiatives should continue to be encouraged.

“The pandemic has changed our learning landscape and while we can’t discount the value of physical learning, we could still optimize what remote learning has to offer. Parents play a huge support role as well in allowing us teachers to ensure that learning does not have to take a backseat during the pandemic where possible,” she said. — DayakDaily
