KOTA SAMARAHAN, Sept 28: Two students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Asajaya have brought pride to Sarawak and Malaysia after their robotics team, AsaGiant Ambal, won a bronze medal in the RoboSports category at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Open Championship Asia Pacific 2026 in Hyderabad, India, today.
According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) report, the achievement by Naqib Rafiudin Fiqri Rosli and Auliya Nuryuzarsieff Nor Shubhibillah was particularly meaningful as they brought Malaysia onto the podium at the championship, which featured 149 teams from 25 countries from Sept 25 to 27.
Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development and Kota Samarahan MP Datuk Rubiah Wang said the achievement proved that rural students have great potential to compete on the international stage when given the right opportunities, guidance and exposure.
“As the Kota Samarahan MP, I am certainly very proud to see two young people from Asajaya bringing the name of their school, district, Sarawak and Malaysia to the international stage.
“But to me, this achievement is bigger than a medal. Behind it is a long journey that has been built over nearly two decades,” she said.
She said AsaGiant Ambal’s achievement resulted from the continuous efforts of its coaches, school, parents, and generations of students who have built the robotics legacy at SMK Asajaya over the years.
Rubiah said the Asajaya Robotics Club, established in 2007, has continued to grow and has produced generations of students capable of achieving success at state, national, and international levels.
“From a school robotics club, AsaGiant Ambal gradually built its name. Students come and go, generations change, but the spirit of AsaGiant Ambal continues to be passed down to go even further,” she added.
Rubiah said AsaGiant Ambal’s journey had also previously taken the name of Asajaya to international competitions in New Delhi in 2016 and Costa Rica in 2017 before returning to achieve success in Hyderabad.
She said the achievement proved that where a person grows up should not be a barrier to achieving world-class success.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s performance at the WRO Open Championship Asia Pacific 2026 also saw the country bring home three gold medals, one bronze medal, three top-eight finishes and one Special Award.
Malaysia won three gold medals in the Future Innovators Elementary, Future Innovators Senior High, and RoboMission Senior High categories, while also securing fifth place in Future Innovators Elementary, sixth and eighth places in RoboMission Elementary, and the Robotics Reliability Award in RoboMission Junior High.
Rubiah hoped AsaGiant Ambal’s success would inspire more students in Asajaya and rural areas to explore robotics, STEM, technology and innovation. — DayakDaily
