SMD Semiconductor partners with global tech leaders to develop AI controller, compound semiconductors

KUCHING, Oct 16: Sarawak’s SMD Semiconductor is collaborating with five leading global technology companies to develop a new artificial intelligence (AI) controller and compound semiconductor chips, which are in high demand for their role in powering high-performance modern technologies.

SMD formalised these strategic memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Silicon Catalyst, Siemens, Cambridge Microelectronics Ltd, Hives AI and Weeteq at International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2024 here today.

The signing ceremony at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) was witnessed by the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In a media statement, SMD chief executive officer (CEO) Shariman Jamil highlighted that these partnerships reflect Sarawak’s strong commitment to driving digital transformation and innovation, both locally and regionally.

“The partnerships established through these MoUs are set to deliver groundbreaking advancements in the fields of AI, semiconductor technology, and digital innovation.

“The collaboration encompasses strategic partnerships, research and development, knowledge sharing, talent development, as well as potential product commercialisation and market expansion,” he said.

At the MoU signing, Silicon Catalyst was represented by managing partner Sean Redmond, Siemens by its vice president of EDA Taiwan and Asean Nina Lin, Cambridge Microelectronic Ltd by its director and founder Nishad Udugampola, Hives AI by its founder and CEO Geraldine Andrieux Gustin and Weeteq by its chief operating officer Martin MacDonald.

In addition to these agreements, SMD signed an MoU with CSA Catapult, a global leader in compound semiconductor applications and commercialisation, in London on April 23 this year. — DayakDaily
