KUCHING, Nov 6: SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd proudly have announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Curtin University Malaysia, marking a significant step forward in semiconductor research and workforce development.

The MoU signing ceremony took place at the 2nd Sarawak Research and Development Symposium 2024 held at the Imperial Hotel here today, witnessed by the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

According to a press release, the MoU underscores SMD’s steadfast commitment to fostering industry-academic partnerships aimed at advancing Sarawak’s semiconductor sector.

The agreements were formalised between SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd, represented by chief executive officer (CEO) Shariman Jamil and vice president of Technology Development, Chia Chieu Yin, with Curtin University Malaysia, represented by acting Pro Vice-Chancellor and chief executive, Prof Vincent Lee Chieng Chen, along with Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Prof Tuong-Thuy Vu.

Shariman highlighted the importance of the partnership, stating “Key initiatives include establishing an IC Research and Innovation Lab, co-developing a postgraduate research programme, and fostering knowledge exchange.

“The agreement also promotes talent growth through an exchange programme, consultancy services and graduate career opportunities within SMD Semiconductor.”

He further elaborated that this strategic alliance aims to strengthen industry-academia synergy, support workforce readiness, and drive innovation, setting a new benchmark for Malaysia’s semiconductor sector. — DayakDaily
