SIBU, June 27: Sibu Municipal Council is waiting for the green light from the Sarawak government to start implementing a smart vehicle parking system which will replace the current parking system which uses coupons.
Speaking at the council’s full board meeting today, chairman Clarence Ting said SMC is in a better position to be the first local authority in Sarawak to implement the system.
“We are in an enviable situation to implement this system as the other local councils have contracted their parking management to contractors. We don’t have a contractor for this (parking management),” he added.
Last week, SMC’s Work and Traffic Committee chairman, Councilor Ting Hua Sing led a team on a visit to Penang to learn how the latter implements its smart parking system.
“After this meeting in Penang, we must push for it and be the first local authority in Sarawak to implement it,” said Clarence.
Meanwhile Hua Sing said the council would not be investing in the system’s facility and software.
“The contractor will be responsible for the facility and software. We will form a joint venture with them in which we will share the proceeds from the parking fee collection for seven years.
“After seven years, the council will take over the management of the system,” he said.
