SPAOH, Dec 1: Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Paku Central has received a facelift thanks to the Malaysian Liquified Natural Gas (MLNG) Bestari Outreach Programme, a key initiative by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) aimed at enhancing the quality of education in rural areas.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), the corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme began in June 2024 and was completed in July at a total cost of approximately RM800,000.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas who officiated the event at the school yesterday (Nov 30), highlighted that through this initiative, MLNG carried out renovations to the dormitory, upgrades to the multipurpose hall, and provided essential equipment such as laboratory tools and sports gear to ensure a more conducive learning environment.

He added that teaching aids were also donated to support the Ministry of Education Malaysia’s (MOE) Digital Education Policy. This included assistance for students in the form of school bags, sportswear, and personal hygiene kits.

“We are grateful to PETRONAS for organising such a meaningful program,” he said, describing it as an excellent example of collaboration between the private sector (PETRONAS) and the government (Education Department) to help rural communities.

He also welcomed the partnership between PETRONAS and Yayasan Sarawak in launching the Borneo Bestari Program, which sponsors 80 students for admission to full boarding schools (SBP) in Peninsular Malaysia as part of the Yayasan Sarawak’s Student Exchange Program and the High-Performance Schools initiative in Sarawak.

After his speech, he announced allocations totalling RM10,000 for the SK Paku Central’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), an additional RM3,000 for purchasing a sofa set, and RM5,000 for a sound system.

He also requested that the Public Works Department (JKR) evaluate the costs of upgrading the access road to the school, with funds expected to be allocated next year.
