This followed a 23-year-old victim being attacked at a hotel by two men who claimed to be the husband and cousin of a woman he had met via the MiChat app.

During the incident, the victim was beaten with a chair, threatened with a knife, and forced to hand over RM500, in addition to losing his car keys, identification card, debit card, and mobile phone.

“The suspects employed a honey trap tactic, using a woman to lure the victim before executing threats, violence, and extortion,” said IPD Kuching in a statement on Friday (Nov 14).

All six suspects have been remanded for seven days until Nov 21, 2025 and are being investigated under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code.
