KUCHING, Oct 22: Singapore athletes Alex Ho and Janet Goh clinched victories in the male and female open categories of the Sarawak Vertical Challenge 2024, held over the weekend of October 19 and 20.
In a press statement today, Sarawak Climbing Association (SCA) President Denis Tan commended the impressive performances of the Singaporean climbers, who dominated the Open Category of the second annual event.
The competition boasted a total prize pool of RM40,000 and drew participants from Southeast Asia and beyond, including Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, the USA, and Lebanon.
“It is heartening to see participants from around the world join us here in Kuching, and we look forward to making it an even bigger event next year,” said Tan, praising the high energy and intense competition witnessed throughout the challenge.
Aside from the Open Category, Malaysian climbers excelled in the Novice and Youth categories.
Umar Aliff Zul Majid and Tammily Lai took first place in the Novice Division, while siblings Aslan Goh and Aurelia Goh from Kuching emerged as champions in the Youth A male and female division.
In the Youth B Male and Female divisions, Maximus Joynson and Jasmine Toh secured the top spots, respectively.
With the success of the 2024 edition, Tan announced that the Sarawak Vertical Challenge has firmly established itself as a key event in the regional climbing calendar.
He further hinted at exciting plans for 2025, including expectations for more sponsors, increased participation, and greater excitement.
The Sarawak Vertical Challenge 2024 was held at Klimbzone Indoor Climbing Gym and was organized by the SCA with support from the Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) and the Malaysian Climbing Federation (PMM). — DayakDaily
