KUCHING, April 25: Siemens Energy has reinforced its commitment to clean energy development in Sarawak by supplying two gas turbines, each with a capacity of 500 megawatts (MW), to support the power plant in Samalaju.

According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), this was announced by Siemens Energy Asia Pacific managing director, Thorbjorn Fors, during a courtesy call to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.

Siemens Energy was recently awarded the project to supply two 500MW gas turbine units for the power plant in Samalaju, Bintulu, proving the company’s confidence in the stability of the policy and potential of Sarawak’s energy sector.

During the meeting, Siemens Energy expressed a strong interest in collaborating to advance Sarawak’s hydrogen economy, including accelerating hydrogen production and usage, as well as enhancing local workforce skills.

The company is also committed to partnering with universities and educational institutions in Sarawak to provide training and development opportunities for students.

“We are committed to working with universities and other institutions in Sarawak to share our knowledge and bring students to Siemens Energy for future training,” Fors told the media.

Siemens Energy also highlighted Sarawak’s vast potential in the clean energy sector, given its abundant natural resources such as hydro, oil, and gas.

The company sees Sarawak as a key player in the ASEAN energy grid and a producer of clean energy molecules such as ammonia and gas.

With the offer of two high-capacity gas turbines for the Samalaju project, Siemens Energy hopes to take the next step in realising the project, which is also part of a broader programme discussed with the Premier.

This collaboration also aligns with Sarawak’s aspiration to become ASEAN’s green energy hub by 2035, with a target to increase electricity capacity to 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and 15GW by 2035.

Through projects such as HYFLEXPOWER, Siemens Energy has demonstrated its gas turbines’ capability to operate on 100 per cent hydrogen, positioning the company as an ideal strategic partner in Sarawak’s pursuit of clean and sustainable energy goals. — DayakDaily
