Sibujaya Pasar Tamu traders duped by fake RM20 notes, police investigating

One of the traders at the market holds up the counterfeit RM20 note.

SIBU, Jan 31: A 40-second video has gone viral recently, depicting a Sibujaya Pasar Tamu trader holding up a fake RM20 note that was given to several traders at the market.

A total of 14 traders at the Tamu lodged a police report yesterday after they had each received a fake RM20 note with the same serial number.

Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili in confirming the case today said the commercial crime investigation unit had yesterday received a report from the victims, aged between 40 to 50.

“All of them said that a 40-year old woman accompanied by her five-year-old daughter had bought daily necessities from them. After that, the woman paid them with a RM20 note each,” he said.

“However, three hours later, one of the traders found that the note’s paper quality was poor and the ink had started to deface it,” he added.

The traded subsequently went live on social media to alert the public of the incident.

He said the fake notes had been sent to Bank Negara for further action.

The case is being investigated under Section 489B of the Penal Code. — DayakDaily
