KUCHING, Aug 13: Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing has called on police to carry out a comprehensive investigation into a recent assault in Sibu, insisting that all individuals involved in the incident be identified and brought to justice.
His call follows public concern over a case in which a man was allegedly beaten by a group of individuals. While several suspects have already been arrested, Tiong said the investigation should not end there.
He urged police to use information gathered from those already in custody, including their statements, to identify and track down every person involved in the attack.
“If there were 20 or 30 people involved, why have only three or four been arrested? The police should be able to identify the others based on the statements given by those already arrested. If the investigation cannot uncover any further leads, then something is clearly not right,” he said in a statement today.
Tiong, who is also the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, said many residents had voiced concerns about recent violent incidents in Sibu and the overall security situation in the town.
According to him, some members of the public have questioned whether Sibu remains a safe place to live and work.
He said the public expected police to establish the full circumstances surrounding the assault, identify all those responsible and take appropriate action to restore confidence in law enforcement.
The minister also called on the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a thorough investigation into the case.
In addition, he urged the CID’s Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies Division (D7) to intensify efforts against secret societies, gangs and related illegal activities in Sibu.
He said this should include increased monitoring, enforcement operations and raids where necessary.
Tiong warned that attempts by certain gang members to display their influence or power should not be taken lightly.
“The police, particularly D7, must have a clear understanding of these groups and their members, and take the necessary action against them,” he said.
At the same time, he called on anyone involved in the assault to cooperate with authorities by surrendering to police rather than attempting to evade arrest.
“If you have done something wrong, come forward and surrender yourself. We are a country governed by law,” he said.
Tiong stressed that no individual is above the law and that criminal groups or so-called “underworld rules” must never be allowed to supersede the country’s legal system.
He reiterated his call for firm police action to identify and investigate every person connected to the assault, while stepping up enforcement efforts against gang-related activities throughout Sibu.
Where necessary, he said, authorities should target such activities at their source through raids and enforcement measures to ensure that Sibu remains a safe, stable and secure community. — DayakDaily
