SIBU, Aug 27: SibuJaya Bike Week which features extreme motor sports, has the potential to become a sports tourism product here.
Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said that the event if organised with good planning and promotion could be a sports tourism attraction such as the F1 race and Malaysian Moto GP in Sepang which are famous internationally.
“For me, it is not impossible that the SibuJaya Extreme Motocross GP, which is listed as the highlight of this SibuJaya Bike Week, will be an attraction for motocross fans from outside Sarawak and also from abroad and can bring sports tourists or sports tourism to Sarawak and to SibuJaya.
“For the people of SibuJaya in particular and Sibu in general, this SibuJaya Bike Week can be used as an event to
introduce SibuJaya to outsiders as well as being able to strengthen friendships between people of different races when they visit the site of SibuJaya Bike Week,” he said in a speech to complete the inauguration of Sibujaya Bike Week 2023 here last night.
Sempurai said that SibuJaya has grown rapidly over the last five years. With a population of more than 40,000, its location at the mid-point of the Pan Borneo Highway has made SibuJaya a very strategic place in terms of potential economic development and population settlement.
“We all know that SibuJaya have grown so rapidly that what we see now is the result of our Premier’s (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) planning and efforts when he was the Minister of Housing.
“With such excellent cooperation between the State government and the main developer Amcorp (Amcorp SibuJaya Sdn Bhd) and also with the local authority (PBT), it has changed the face of SibuJaya into a very well-organised and planned place in terms of the development of commercial buildings and housing for residents,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Sempurai said, SibuJaya GP which will be held from August 26 to September 3 will see the participation of riders from outside Sarawak, and this indirectly promises a great and intense race for local riders.
Therefore, he hoped that SibuJaya GP and SibuJaya Bike Week will attract many more visitors and motocross fans from all over Sarawak and from outside Sarawak to visit SibuJaya.
Apart from SibuJaya GP, other events which are scheduled to be held during SibuJaya Bike Week 2023 include a Bike Show, mountain bike and entertainment stage events. — DayakDaily
