KUCHING, July 28: The proposed bridge linking Sibu town with the Sibu Western Bank area continues to make encouraging progress, with the project’s design now completed.
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch chairman Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie said the progress is a key milestone that reinforces confidence in the implementation of this strategic infrastructure initiative, which is expected to drive further growth and development in the area.
“The latest development reflected the Sarawak government’s continued commitment, under the leadership of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, to delivering infrastructure projects that bring tangible benefits to the people.
“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the Premier for announcing the latest progress of this project. The development not only provides renewed hope for Sibu residents but will also serve as an important catalyst for the growth of the Sibu Western Bank area,” he said in a statement as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today.
Lau said the bridge would significantly enhance connectivity between Sibu town and the Western Bank area, helping to accelerate local development, stimulate economic activities, attract new investments and create more employment opportunities for residents.
“Beyond improving accessibility, the bridge also has the potential to become a new landmark for Sibu while contributing towards more balanced regional development,” he added.
He noted that the proposal for the bridge was first raised during a SUPP-organised Chinese New Year celebration last year, which was attended by the Sarawak Premier as the guest of honour.
Following the proposal, the Premier directed the formation of a task force, co-chaired by Deputy Minister of Education and Innovation Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee and Deputy Minister of Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, to study and oversee the project’s implementation.
Lau said the completion of the bridge design marked an important step forward, demonstrating that the project was progressing according to schedule with a clear pathway towards implementation.
“ SUPP would continue to work closely with relevant stakeholders to support the successful delivery of the project, ensuring that its development benefits would be fully realised by the people of Sibu and the Western Bank community,” he said. — DayakDaily
