KUCHING, June 20: A university student suffered a loss of RM100,400 after falling victim to an online investment scam promising lucrative returns in a short time.
According to Sibu District Police Chief, ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, initial investigations revealed that the victim came across an advertisement using the name ‘Homin International Finance Academic’ (HIFA) on Facebook on May 1 and responded to it.
“The victim was then contacted and added to a WhatsApp group, whereby the ‘admin’ gave instructions and guidance on investment, including sharing screenshots and testimonials supposedly from other investors who had made profits,” he said in a statement.
The victim then conducted seven transactions amounting to RM100,400 to five local bank accounts.
He added that the victim realised it was a scam after the victim’s aunt questioned the investment, particularly after being asked for a loan. It was also noted that the victim had borrowed money from friends.
As a result, an investigation has been initiated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for alleged cheating. — DayakDaily
