Sibu snatch thief sentenced to 8 years’ jail, 10 rotan strokes

SIBU, Aug 4: A 28-year-old jobless man was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment and 10 strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court today for robbing a woman of her handbag.

The accused, Lim Ah Yew of Nanga Dap pleaded guilty to the offence before Justice Marutin Pagan.

He was charged under Section 392 of the Penal Code.


According to brief facts of the case, at about 9.40am on July 28, the victim, a 65-year-old woman, was with her daughter standing in front of a shop at Lembangan Road when the accused walked up to her and snatched away her handbag.

The handbag contained RM40, both the elderly woman and her husband’s identity cards, a bank ATM card and a Kenyalang Gold Card.

Four enforcement officers from Sibu Municipal Council who happened to be at the scene immediately contacted the police.

A police team showed up and arrested the accused who was found hiding in the backyard of a shophouse. — DayakDaily
