Sibu snatch theft suspect flees capture, abandons motorcycle

The motorcycle was abandoned by the suspect after a failed snatch theft attempt in front of the supermarket.

SIBU, Nov 24: Police are on a manhunt for an unemployed man who is suspected of attempting to snatch a woman’s gold chain in front of a supermarket in Jalan Salim yesterday.

Sibu District Police Chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit disclosed the 38-year-old suspect is believed to have attempted the theft when the victim was riding pillion on a motorcycle ridden by her son at the scene around 12.30pm.

“The suspect who came from behind on a motorcycle tried to snatch the victim’s gold chain but failed.

“As a result of the suspect’s actions, the gold chain broke and fell inside the complainant’s shirt,” he added.

The complainant’s son in his 20s acted to stop the suspect but the suspect managed to escape without his motorcycle.

“The victim suffered injuries and bruises on the lower part of her neck,” Stanley revealed.

The suspect’s motorcycle was then handed over to a police team from the Lanang Sibu Police Station who happened to pass by the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the motorcycle used by the suspect was registered under the name of his mother who lives in Permai Timur.

The police went to the woman’s residence but the suspect was not around at that time.

The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for snatch theft which resulted in injury. — DayakDaily
