SIBU, July 23: The devastating fire that destroyed 13 shoplots along Jalan Khoo Peng Loong has prompted the Sarawak government to review fire prevention and firefighting measures, with issues raised by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) set to be brought to the federal level.
Quoted by TVS, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said Bomba’s concerns and recommendations following the blaze will be documented and raised with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) during a meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
“When I attend the meeting with KPKT in Kuala Lumpur, I will raise the matter so that the necessary follow-up action can be taken,” he told reporters after visiting the fire site today.
Dr Sim said although Bomba comes under the federal government’s jurisdiction, the Sarawak government will continue working with the agency to address the issues identified.
“This is not the time to point fingers. What is important is that we solve the problem and take the necessary action,” he said.
Earlier, Dr Sim was briefed by Sibu Fire and Rescue Zone 4 chief Andy Alie on the challenges faced during the firefighting operation. Among the main obstacles were the ageing buildings’ design and construction, with wooden floors, ceilings and internal structures allowing the fire to spread more rapidly and making it harder to contain.
Based on Bomba’s recommendations, he said the State government will study the need for improved firefighting equipment as well as enhancements to building design and fire safety features.
He added that Bomba’s official investigation report will be required for insurance claims and to determine whether the affected structures are safe before restoration work can begin.
The Sarawak government will also facilitate the restoration of the affected premises while the relevant authorities and insurance companies complete the necessary assessments and procedures.
Dr Sim said the incident also underscored the importance of improving public awareness of fire safety and encouraging the use of basic firefighting equipment.
He also expressed appreciation to firefighters for their tireless efforts in preventing the blaze from spreading to neighbouring buildings. — DayakDaily
