KUCHING, March 21: Residents in Sibu have been observed lining up as early as 4.30pm for the gas cylinder exchange programme, which began at 7pm, demonstrating the significant shortage of red gas cylinders in the town.

As reported by TVS today, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek stressed that PETROSniaga Sdn Bhd should take the Petros liquefied natural gas (LPG) cylinder shortage issue in Sibu seriously in order to address it.

“I’ve done this before—they drive in and exchange their gas cylinders; they didn’t have to get out of their cars.

“But today the situation is completely different, as they have to get out of their cars and queue in person with the gas cylinders. This makes me very sad.

“This shows that the shortage of red gas cylinders is still very serious because those who came today are all individual households, not from factories or those who run food businesses,” he said when met by reporters at the programme, which was held at Logos Methodist Church at Jalan Tong Sang last night (March 20).

TVS also reported that a total of 200 gas cylinders were exchanged during the programme within half-an-hour, with a limit of one gas cylinder per person following overwhelming response from the public.

Furthermore, Chieng expressed hope that PETROSniaga would take the issue seriously and devise a solution, particularly given the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

“Sibu is different from Miri. In Miri, they have gas through pipelines to houses, but not in Sibu. So, they need these gas cylinders as they have to cook every day.

“PETROSniaga Sdn Bhd needs to find a strategy and help so that people do not suffer,” he said.

Chieng also announced that he will host the next gas exchange programme next Wednesday (March 27), and will reveal the time and venue via his social media platform soon. — DayakDaily
