SIBU, June 30: Members of the public are advised to activate their WeChat app’s setting for SMS verification so as to prevent their account from being hacked.

Sibu District Police Chief ACP Zuklifli Suhaili said today that one should also not easily believe that their close friends are seeking for their assistance when the account particulars appear suspicious.

He said this following a case where a civil servant was cheated of RM1,800 via WeChat.

“On June 29, our commercial crime investigation division received a report lodged by a civil servant who claimed that she was cheated of RM1,800 by a suspect who impersonated her friend on WeChat,” he said.

The civil servant had transferred the money to an account on the same day after the scammer contacted her about borrowing money.

ACP Zuklifli said that the victim was shocked later when her friend told her that her WeChat account had been hijacked by someone and that she did not request to borrow the money from her.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — DayakDaily
