Sibu, Miri sees triple-digit increases as Sarawak records 608 new infections

KUCHING, May 20: Sibu and Miri registered triple-digit increases today as Sarawak reported 608 new Covid-19 cases.

This pushes the cumulative total of coronavirus cases in the State past the 40,000 mark to 40,259.


There were also two new fatalities reported involving senior citizens.

According to a report from the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the new cases were derived from Sibu (120), Miri (110), Kuching (86), Kapit (76), Bintulu (50), Selangau (32), Pakan (19), Bukit Mabong (15), Song (12), Samarahan (11), Lawas (10), Serian (9), Sarikei (8), Subis (7), Saratok (7), Mukah (7), Sebauh (6), Bau (5), Belaaa (4), Betong (4), Julau (2), Asajaya (2), Pusa (2), Dalat (1), Kanowit (1), Simunjan and Meradong (1).

There was one imported case reported, involving a returnee from Suriname, a country in South America.

The two fatalities involved an 84-year-old woman from Miri and a 90-year-old man from Bau. Both had hypertension.

This brings Sarawak’s Covid-19 death toll to 239.

Meanwhile, there were 717 Covid-19 patients reported as recovered, bringing cumulative recoveries in the State to 33,542 persons or 83.32 per cent of total cases recorded.

A total of 6,347 Covid-19 patients are still being treated in various hospitals and quarantine and low-risk treatment centres throughout the State.

There were 619 new Person-Under-Investigation (PUI) cases reported, with none awaiting Covid-19 swab test results. — DayakDaily
