SIBU, Dec 21: Jade, known for its beauty, is also renowned for its association with wealth and prosperity, making it a highly sought-after stone by collectors and those looking to add a little luck to their lives.

However, that wasn’t the case for a man who lost RM580,000 to an e-commerce scam in his attempt to purchase the stone.

In a media statement issued today, Sarawak police commissioner Dato Mancha Ata said the victim, who is in his late 60s and owns a company in Sibu, met the suspect on Facebook in mid-November 2024.

“The victim stated he wanted to buy jade, and the suspect provided him with a link (https://www.yubao-jade.com) which seemed to offer various types of jade.

“Interested by the offer, the victim then contacted the suspect through WhatsApp and was instructed to carry out several bank transfers in stages to an account provided by the suspect, amounting to RM580,000.

“The victim realised he was scammed when he was still asked to make payments.” — DayakDaily
