SIBU, Dec 3: A Sibu man in his 30s lost a total of RM43,351 after falling victim to an online job scam promising lucrative commissions.
According to the Sibu district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili, the case involved the victim being deceived by a woman using the name āLau Sze Yaā, who initially contacted him through the Facebook Messenger app on Nov 27.
āThe victim was initially interested in purchasing items from the suspect but was later offered a job with attractive commissions,ā said Zulkipli in a statement today.
The suspect tricked the victim by assigning simple tasks such as clicking YouTube links, giving likes, and forwarding links to others. For completing these tasks, the victim received an RM190 commission.
However, the subsequent tasks turned into a scam when the victim was instructed to make payments due to a so-called technical error.
Zulkipli said the victim ended up making seven bank transfers totalling RM43,351 to two local accounts on Dec 1 and 2.
āThe victim only realised he had been scammed when asked to make an additional payment of RM20,894, which he couldnāt fulfill as he had run out of savings,ā he added.
The public is urged to remain cautious and not fall for suspicious job offers, especially those involving financial transactions.
The case is investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud. ā DayakDaily
