SIBU, April 8: A man here is seeking justice after finding his late mother’s unclaimed money totalling RM116,000 has been apparently claimed by a syndicate using false documents.

“On Dec 25 last year, I submitted the relevant documents to claim the money at the Accountant-General’s Department counter here. However, I was told that the money was no longer there,” said the victim, Lau Kah Lee, 65, at a press conference at Sibu MP Oscar Ling’s service centre today.

Lau then lodged a police report over the matter on Jan 12.

Lau said his mother passed away in 2008. Late last year after checking with the unclaimed money portal at https://egumis.anm.gov.my/, he found that his late mother had left behind RM116,000.

Ling, who had been following the case closely, said he suspected that the perpetrators were a syndicate who targeted unclaimed money in large amounts.

“This is quite serious as I was told that the syndicate had forged documents from the district office, Accountant-General’s Department and National Registration Department in submitting a claim for the unclaimed money,” he said.

Ling said the victim is seeking justice for the unlawful claim of his late mother’s assets.

“He is also looking for an answer from the Ministry of Finance on how to settle the case. He also wants the police to investigate the case. This is a serious case and I don’t want more cases to happen,” he added.

Ling also urged MOF to check its system pertaining to unclaimed money.

“As it is, once the unclaimed money had been returned to the owners, a message “Tuntutan sudah dilaksanakan (claim has been made) would be displayed in the owner’s account in the eGumis portal. However in the victim mother’s case, there was no such message,” he said.

Ling claimed there were three similar cases in Sibu.

He advised the public to check whether they have unclaimed money, and if they do, to submit a claim for it. — DayakDaily
