SIBU, May 9: Sibu Lorry Association heaved a sigh of relief as they can continue using the six-acre piece of vacant land next to the Igan Bridge as their parking base.

The issue surfaced as Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) wants the land for its pylon, which is used for carrying electricity cable high above the ground.

Because of that, the association’s members could not park their lorries there.

With this, Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Khim Shin said the problem had been resolved.

“We had a meeting this morning, and at the site, we explained to the lorry association that this part will be for an underground cable.

“According to Sarawak Energy, it will be about five to six metres underground, and after they have done the construction, the association can still use it,” he said.

Lee added that the temporary occupation license (TOL) for this piece of land expired yesterday (May 8), and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will have to apply for renewal because this land is under the SMC TOL.

“The Land and Survey Department here will apply for an extension of this TOL, at least for the next few years, so that the association can continue to use it. So we resolved the issue today,” he said.
