KUCHING, May 9: Deputy Premier of Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian lauds the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) for its pilot programme this year in assisting religious associations in celebrating Wesak Day.

Dr Sim said that this year’s Wesak Day celebration in Kuching is a celebration for everyone, regardless of race and religion.

“This year, I want to thank Unifor for helping to spend some of the funding to decorate this place (Cat Statue) in conjunction with Wesak Day,” he told reporters after the lighting up ceremony of Wesak Day decorations at the White Cat statue at Jalan Padungan here today.

He added that on the actual Wesak Day, there would be a simple ceremony and programme.

Meanwhile, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the decorations create awareness and understanding among the general public about the celebration.

Also speaking during the ceremony was Unifor director Richard Lon, who said Unifor would also assist in the Deepavali and Christmas celebrations later this year.

“This (Wesak Day) is a pilot programme and will continue in years to come,” he said. — DayakDaily
