KUCHING, June 13: A local man in his late 40s working as a manual labourer in Sibu has fallen victim to a non-existent online investment scheme, losing approximately RM120,000 in the process.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata confirmed that the victim had lodged a police report after realising he had been duped by scammers posing as investment agents and even a fake government agency.
According to the report, the incident began in mid-March 2025 when the victim was browsing the internet at home and came across an investment opportunity offered by a company claiming to be Silvercape Capital Sdn Bhd.
“Attracted by the scheme, he contacted an individual who introduced himself as an agent of the company. The suspect proceeded to guide the victim on how to start investing and claimed that he had already earned substantial profits just days after committing funds to the scheme.
“However, the victim was later told he needed to make additional payments in order to withdraw the purported profits,” Mancha disclosed in a statement today.
Feeling suspicious, the victim attempted to seek help and contacted another individual who claimed to represent a government body known as Global Anti Scam.
In a further twist of deception, the individual instructed the victim to transfer more money to a designated bank account in order to report and recover his losses.
Believing the instructions to be legitimate, the victim went on to make several online fund transfers in stages, amounting to about RM120,000.
Only after all attempts to retrieve his funds failed did the victim realise he had been scammed. As of the time the police report was lodged, no returns or refunds had been received.
Sarawak police have urged the public to remain vigilant against online investment offers that promise unusually high returns or require further payments to unlock profits. — DayakDaily
