SIBU, Sept 1: The proposed pipeline construction connecting the Sibu Salim Water Treatment Plant to Kanowit is expected to reach completion by February 2024.
In a media statement on Wednesday (Aug 30), the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) said the project had been underway since Aug 29, 2019.
Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi has recently visited the proposed Kanowit Water Supply Phase 2 (Stage 2) project site.
The project encompasses several key components, including the construction of the Durin Booster Station, complete with a 1.5 million litre (ML) soil suction tank.
Additionally, a 3.5 ML elevated water tank in Bukong Jagoi will be constructed alongside installing a 55km long pipeline, stretching from the Salim Water Treatment Plant to Kanowit, according to a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today.
Upon completion, this project is expected to significantly increase water pressure and water supply stability for residents in Kanowit, Machan, Nibong Tada, Durin, Sibu Jaya, and the surrounding areas.
Alongside this initiative, the Sibu Water Board (SWB) is also planning to increase the capacity of the Bukit Lima Treatment Plant with a target of achieving a daily treated water output of 15 million litres (MLD) that would effectively cater to the needs of the city, the Lanang vicinity and the Deshon Road Booster.
Also present were MUT permanent secretary Jafri Lias, Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) director Ir Chang Kuet Shian, SWB general manager Abdul Malik @Itin Langit and its deputy general manager Lau Pon Yin. — DayakDaily
