KUCHING, April 25: The Sibu International Powerboat Race has the potential to become a major event in Sarawak’s tourism calendar, with the event already attracting strong participation including competitors from neighbouring Brunei Darussalam.

According to a TVS news report, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the organisation of the race marks an important milestone in Sarawak’s water sports development. The race has created opportunities for the local younger generation to learn and gain exposure to world-class water sports.

“When more foreign participants are involved, it will open up a space for exchanging views and understanding on the rules and techniques of racing according to global standards,” he said at the launch of the Sibu International Powerboat Race 2025 at the Li Hua Waterfront today.

He also expects the event to see about 20,000 spectators flooding the Pulau Li Hua waterfront throughout the three-race event. The race had already garnered encouraging response with 276 boats registered across various categories, including participation from Brunei Darussalam.

Tiong further highlighted the potential of transforming Li Hua Waterfront into a premier water sports destination.

“We need to discuss with the Resident’s Office, government agencies and local NGOs to draw up a plan for the development of infrastructure and facilities,” he explained.

He also suggested that the development proposal be brought to the State level and then submitted to the Ministry of Economy for further consideration.

Aside from that, Tiong, who had channeled RM200,000 to the success of the race, suggested that more non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and international representatives be involved in planning future events, including in terms of promotion and sports development strategies. – DayakDaily
