Sibu freak storm: DAP opens registration for financial aid starting today, ends April 14

SIBU, April 10: A significant number of victims of the freak storm which hit Sibu town on April 5 were spotted at the Sibu Democratic Action Party (DAP) office in Rejang Park today to register for financial aid.

“Registration starts today until this Friday, from 9am to 4pm daily. This is our deadline. So I advise house owners affected by the freak storm to register by Friday.


“We will categorise the damage and also do the assessment based on the photos taken. A number of them have already carried out repair work so we will based on the photos for the aid,” Sibu MP Oscar Ling told reporters.

The financial aid offered will be based on the amount of property damage caused by the storm. Victims who had roofs blown away will be eligible to receive up to RM1,000.

Ling said it would take about one to two days to assess each application depending on the situation. He estimated that the victims number in the “few hundreds”.

He also disclosed the financial aid is for victims who are voters in his constituency. Storm victims from the Lanang constituency are advised to register at Lanang MP Alice Lau’s service centre in Jalan Aman.

“This is part of my service centre’s contribution to the victims. I understand that SDMC (Sibu Disaster Management Committee) will also be helping the victims,” he said. — DayakDaily
