Shift to backyard vegetable planting as side income, PRS women told

KUCHING, July 17: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) women are encouraged to start backyard vegetable planting as a side income or extra food to be put on the table.

PRS Women chief Dato Sri Doris Brodie said growing vegetables using whatever space the people have around their house such as the backyard not only allows them to put whatever free time they have at home to good use, but more importantly, it can save money from not having to buy vegetables from outside.

“We can also be self assured that our home grown vegetables are healthy and organic because we will not use synthetic pesticides.

“Instead, we will be using a safe and organic homemade concoction which we hope to learn from this webinar to prevent pests and insects from harming our plants,” she said when officiating the webinar on ‘Backyard Vegetable Planting’ today.

She also encouraged more women especially those staying in the urban areas to make backyard vegetable planting a hobby as it will not only save cost but also generate income too.

“With smart thinking and determination, we can still do vegetable planting despite space limitations because we can do planting in pots, boxes, polibags and even using old unwanted car tyres,” she added.

The webinar was jointly organised by the Education Bureau of PRS Women’s Wing in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture (DOA) Sarawak.

Meanwhile, the Education Bureau’s chief Misiah Abdullah said 70 participants comprising PRS women members statewide took part in the webinar.

She said many more wanted to participate but they do not have access to good Internet coverage as most of the members are from rural areas.

“Nevertheless, I am happy to see the response and the enthusiasm demonstrated by the participants,” said Misiah.

She also thanked Roslita Sarieng from DOA Sarawak for facilitating the webinar. — DayakDaily
