KUCHING, Aug 19: Air quality in seven areas across Sarawak deteriorated to unhealthy levels overnight, with Lundu recording the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 169, after all monitoring stations across the State had reported moderate readings yesterday.
According to the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak’s air quality update at 8am today, the affected areas were Lundu (169), Serian (156), Kuching (154), Lubok Antu (154), Sri Aman (152), Samarahan (113) and Mukah (106), all of which fell within the unhealthy category.
Meanwhile, several divisions remained in the moderate category, including Sarikei (89), Sibu (92), Kapit (63), Bintulu (95), Samalaju (83), Miri (80), ILP Miri (80), Limbang (71), Tebedu (92), Lawas (75) and Bario (58).
Under NREB’s classification, API readings between 101 and 200 are considered unhealthy and may pose health risks, particularly to sensitive groups such as children, the elderly and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.
Members of the public are advised to minimise prolonged outdoor activities and monitor official air quality updates as conditions continue to develop. — DayakDaily
