SERIAN, Sept 5: The annual Serian Rafting Challenge, which had modest beginnings in 2012, is now flourishing with growing participation each year.
Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem announced that for this year’s 11th Edition, 187 teams, including participants from Indonesia, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, and across the state, will take part.
This event, offering a RM20,000 cash prize, is scheduled for Sept 8 and 9, starting from Kpg Tema Mawang and concluding at Kpg Tebakang, covering a distance of 25km.
Riot expressed his pride in the event’s progress, stating, “I’m glad and proud to note that the Serian Rafting Challenge is gaining popularity since 2018 when it was included in Sarawak Tourism’s calendar year, with participation increasing every year. It started domestically, became national, and now it’s international.”
He noted that only 66 teams participated in 2018, which increased to 68 the following year. In 2020, 140 teams joined, and this year’s event boasts 187 teams.
Riot also highlighted that this year’s event will feature additional activities, including the ‘Ratu Bilanting’ competition, sports events, and cultural performances.
He emphasized that the Serian Rafting Challenge 2023 serves as a platform for locals to conduct business and commended the Serian District Council (SDC) as the primary organizer.
Riot expressed gratitude to the federal Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, which allocated RM118,000, as well as non-governmental organisations and individuals for their contributions and donations to support the event. — DayakDaily
