Sept start date for RM120 mln Batu Kawah-Desa Wira flood mitigation project

KUCHING, July 7: Construction on a comprehensive flood mitigation project for the Batu Kawah-Desa Wira residential area costing RM120 million will start by September this year.

According to a press statement from Minister for Local Government and Housing Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, the project, which is approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12), will see the upgrade of the drainage system from Desa Wira until Sungai Maong’s main drainage system.

“This will costs RM29 million in phase one, which is currently under tender process. Under this project, all of the monsoon drain at the residential area will be upgraded and enlarged, and those low-lying road areas will be filled high to ensure consistent water flow drain and no stagnant water at the area,” the statement read.

The first part of the project open tender will be in July 2020, and rest of the tender will be rolled out over the next three months progressively.

Dr Sim expressed satisfaction that the project has been approved and the work will begin soon.

He highlighted that Desa Wira is in need of the comprehensive flood mitigation project to solve its long-term flood problem. — DayakDaily
