KUCHING, Sept 11: Senior citizens from the Bukit Saban constituency now have their own Senior Citizens Activity Centre (Pawe) here.
According to a statement, Bukit Saban assemblyman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah launched the centre at a semi-detached house in BDC Park yesterday.
He said he and a few other leaders from the division had thought of starting such a centre since 10 years ago.
On July 16, a consensus was reached to start the centre in a meeting with Bukit Saban leaders and senior citizens here.
Uggah who is its chairman said currently the centre had 32 registered members and would accept more soon.
He said it was formed to ensure that the welfare of the senior citizens would be taken care of.
The centre has lined up a number of activities for members including Bible study, handicraft making, cookery class, health programmes, agriculture (hydroponic system), counselling, entertainment and basic computer skills.
“We want them to know simple but current things like how to use Grab service for food orders or transport, paying parking fees and other online services.
“But of course being able to socialise with each other and all these will give them a better quality of life,” said Uggah.
Uggah who is also Deputy Sarawak Premier and Infrastructure and Port Development Minister said if the centre was a success it would open its door to all senior citizens from the Betong parliamentary constituency.
He appealed for close cooperation in ensuring its success.
Uggah’s wife Datin Amar Dato Doreen Mayang, Betong MP Dr Richard Rapu, Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier Roseline Mapong, Pawe deputy chairman Rev Dennis Gimang and its supervisor Andrew Kalong @Mawat were among those at the ceremony. — DayakDaily
