KUCHING, Feb 19: Amateur Bowling Association of Sarawak (Abas), has launched a new programme called the Senator School Bowling Programme to groom young players for the sport.
Senator Dato Ahmad Ibrahim said he was encouraged to introduce this new programme to Abas and that the association supported the programme and agreed to develop it.
“There are other bowling programmes to groom youth to the sport in schools by the association, but this programme has special funding,” he said.
“I am to take this new programme sincerely and with the support of the Sarawak government,” he added.
Ahmad told reporters this at the press conference after launching the programme at Megalanes Sarawak in Batu Kawah today.
He pointed out that the programme used the word ‘Senator’ because he wanted to see the programme continue after his term as a senator ends.
“The idea for this is simple. As parents, we are concerned about our children loitering. So we hoped that there be sports activities they can join and one of them is bowling.
“I support the sport of bowling as it does not discriminate size, age and gender. The environment is also conducive,” he explained.
He said the programme would kick off in schools in the city, and could be introduced to smaller towns in Sarawak with suitable bowling facilities.
“For this programme to start this year, I had allocatted RM36,000 and we hope this would help Abas to find future champions for Sarawak in the sport,” he said.
Also present were Sarawak Sports Council chief executive officer Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan, and Abas president Sunny Hi Po Heng. — DayakDaily
