KUCHING, Feb 25: Senator Abun Sui Anyit has asserted that if Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak is perceived as weak, there should be no reason for anyone to fear the party’s participation in elections or to suggest that it should refrain from contesting under any pretext.

In a statement posted on his social media yesterday (Feb 24), he dismissed recent remarks from non-party figures who questioned PKR Sarawak’s role and presence in the State’s political landscape.

Abun Sui, who is also PKR Sarawak information chief, reaffirmed that the party remains committed in its mission to offer the people an alternative leadership built on principles of justice, transparency, and integrity.

“It is interesting that leaders from outside PKR are so invested in our internal affairs. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, such opinions are irrelevant, especially when they lack truth,” he said in a statement posted on his social media last night (Feb 24).

Abun Sui also took aim at former PKR leaders who had defected from the party, only to later seek positions within the government.

He pointed out that some of these individuals have secured key posts in government-linked companies (GLCs), a move he described as a contradiction to their past stance.

He further called on external parties to refrain from interfering in PKR Sarawak’s affairs, asserting that the party would make its own decisions without external influence.

“Therefore, it is improper for any external leader to meddle in PKR Sarawak’s affairs or attempt to dictate its direction. Such opinions are merely putting ‘words in our mouths’ and do not warrant a response regarding our party’s internal policies.

“If we are weak, as some claim, then there is no reason for anyone to fear our participation in elections,” he reiterated.

Abun Sui reaffirmed PKR Sarawak’s commitment to ensuring proper checks and balances in the Sarawak’s governance, urging voters to consider Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sarawak as a viable alternative in the next Sarawak election.

He expressed confidence that the coalition could provide better governance, with the potential to even take over the Sarawak government.

In a meeting on Sunday (Feb 23), PH Sarawak confirmed that PKR Sarawak, alongside its coalition partners Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), will contest in the upcoming Sarawak election, which must be held by July 2026.

PH leaders argued that the state’s current political landscape—where Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) dominates the Sarawak Legislative Assembly with an overwhelming 80-to-2 majority—lacks the necessary checks and balances, which they believe could be detrimental to the interests of the people.

In response, Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) president Datuk Larry Sng, a former PKR Sarawak chief, suggested that the party should consider becoming a component party under GPS if it wants to secure its political future.

Sng expressed doubts about PKR Sarawak’s ability to be a serious contender, reasoning that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also PKR president, needs GPS’ support at the federal level. He also cited financial constraints as a major obstacle for the party.

Addressing PKR’s role in the federal administration, Abun Sui defended Prime Minister’s engagement with opposition-led states, such as his recent meeting with Kelantan Menteri Besar.

“This is what a professional leader should do—govern with respect and maintain government-to-government relations, regardless of political differences,” he stressed.

As PKR Sarawak prepares for the next State election, Abun Sui affirmed that the party’s focus remains on assisting the federal Madani government in delivering essential programmes to the people, particularly those in rural and underserved communities. — DayakDaily
