Self-employed man fined RM3,000 for stealing MPP traffic lights

KUCHING, Nov 15: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a self-employed man RM3,000 for stealing traffic lights belonging to Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).

Ben Joseph Au Siew Yen, 40, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

Magistrate Syarifah Azura Wan Ali sentenced the accused to a fine of RM3,000 or in default to three months’ imprisonment.


Au was charged with stealing three units of lens, three units of reflectors and three units of halogen traffic light bulbs belonging to MPP, at the junction near a primary school in Kota Padawan, at about 12pm on November 11, 2021.

According to the brief facts of the case, the accused told the police that he did not like to see the traffic lights as they were old and not bright.

The accused had lodged complaints with the MPP regarding the traffic lights in the area of 7th Mile and 10th Mile.

Therefore, he decided to take down the old traffic lights in the hopes that the relevant authority would install a new set of traffic lights.

Prosecuting Officer Insp Mohd Adzmei Ahmad prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented by counsel. — DayakDaily
