SIBU, Dec 6: Sekolah Menengah Citizen is racing against time to raise RM2 million to rebuild a new block of hostel facility next year.

Chairman of the school board of management Kapitan Fong Tat Shen told reporters on the sidelines of the SUPP Dudong branch donation drive at Rejang Park Market today that they had so far only received RM500,000.

“We have so far raised RM500,000 from donation drive. This is not enough as we need at least RM2 million for the project,” he lamented.

Fong, however, acknowledged that it was not easy raising funds during this Covid-19 pandemic period as most people are impacted by the disease especially in their finances.

“For those who have contributed, we thank them,” he said.

Meanwhile, SUPP Dudong chairman Wong Ching Yong said they had so far collected over RM150,000 from the public.

The donation drive today was the sixth by the branch since the fire incident on Oct 23 this year, which burned down the hostel facility.

Wong also presented a personal contribution of RM10,000 by SUPP president Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian at the function.

“After Rejang Park, we will be going to Sungai Merah, Pasar Tamu Taman Indah and Kampung Bandung market,” he said.

They had also planned to hold similar projects in Kanowit and Kapit.

A vegetarian food seller at Jalan Chengal, Liew Fong had also given RM926 to the school.

The money, according to the school principal Ling Shean Leong, was from his charity sale which he had conducted two weeks ago.

“He has two children studying in our school. One is in Junior Three and the other, Senior Two. Next year, another one will be in Junior One,” he said. — DayakDaily
