KUCHING, Oct 2: The 32-year-old security guard of a secondary school in Batu Kawa who was sentenced to six years jail on August 1 for raping a student between Jan 1 and Jan 31 this year had his sentence enhanced to nine years and two strokes of the rotan today.

High Court Judge Supang Lian, in delivering her judgement, said the respondent, John Digon Kunyae, as a married man had taken advantage of a minor by raping her and taking photographs and video of the sexual act.

She said public interest would be served with a deterrent sentence, and agreed that the trend is to impose whipping in cases of rape, more so when the victim is a minor. Having considering all these factors, she enhanced the imprisonment term to nine years plus two strokes of the rotan.

John Digon was charged with raping a 15-year-old school girl between Jan 1 and Jan 31, 2018, at the guard house of a secondary school in Batu Kawa, an offence punisable under sub-Section 376(1) of the Penal Code. — DayakDaily
