Search underway for man missing in Miri forest near bus terminal since Thursday night

KUCHING, Aug 3: A search and rescue (SAR) operation is underway to locate a 44-year-old Iban man who went missing in a forested area near the Miri Bypass close to the new bus terminal on Thursday night (Aug 1).

According to Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, police received a missing person report at about 11.30am yesterday (Aug 2) from a woman, who said her brother had not returned home after venturing into the jungle alone to forage for wild vegetables.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed, reportedly contacted his family around 8.30pm on Aug 1 requesting to be picked up from the location.

“However, when family members arrived and searched the area, they were unable to locate him.

“A missing persons investigation was opened by the Miri Central Police Station,” he said in a statement today.

Following the report, a SAR operation was launched at 2pm yesterday and continued until 6.30pm, but no findings were made.

The search resumed this morning (Aug 3) at 8am involving multiple agencies including the Royal Malaysia Police (Miri District and General Operations Force), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Civil Defence Force (APM), and family members of the missing man.

Members of the public are advised not to speculate or spread unverified information regarding the incident.
