MARUDI, July 19 : A search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched yesterday afternoon for a missing man after a boat carrying six people capsized in Sungai Tutoh Hulu Sungai Baram.
Five people including two female survived in the incident, while one is still missing.
The missing man has been identified as 67-year-old Jangin Luwau. An earlier report initially said the missing passenger was an elderly woman.
Jangin was wearing a red T-shirt and long jean pants.
He is a differently-abled individual (OKU) due to a disability in his right leg and he cannot swim.
According to Marudi Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) station chief Maureen Sim, they were alerted about the capsize on Monday night (July 17) at 8.30pm.
“Prior to the incident, the boat was enroute to Ba’ Selulong from Kampung Long Bedian,” she said.
It is understood that the boat’s passengers were at Kampung Long Bedian to seek medical treatment at the clinic and purchased some groceries before they left Long Bedian for Ba’ Selulong.
However, the boat capsized while enroute to Ba’ Selulong at 5.30pm on Monday (July 17).
On July 18 (Tuesday) ,following the report received, a team of Marudi firefighters were deployed to the scene in a Bomba Air unit.
The SAR began at 12.30pm yesterday within 3km radius from the scene.
Yesterday’s SAR (July 18) was postponed at 6.30pm, and will be continued today (July 19) to find Jangin. — DayakDaily
