KUCHING, July 27: The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) is set to convene soon to address the ongoing hot and dry weather conditions affecting the State.

According to a press release, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also SDMC chairman, announced today that the meeting will establish directives for divisional and district committees to prepare for the challenges posed by the current weather situation.

Uggah made these remarks during a media session following the conclusion of a ‘Baju Dabong’ (kebaya) embroidery course for 20 participants from the Bukit Saban constituency.

“During this hot and dry season, certain areas in the State are particularly susceptible to bushfires.

“Additionally, some longhouses and villages are experiencing water shortages.

“These divisional and district committees are required to hold their respective meetings to address these issues, especially concerning water scarcity,” he was quoted as saying.

He further emphasised the importance of these committees providing feedback to the SDMC to ensure coordinated efforts across the State.

Regarding the frequent bushfire outbreaks in the Kuala Baram area of the Miri Division, Uggah was reassured that the SDMC was fully aware and that the Miri Division Disaster Management Committee had implemented standard operating procedures (SOPs) to manage the situation.

“The SOPs include aerial monitoring using drones and the involvement of RELA personnel for surveillance. Any outbreak must be addressed immediately,” he noted.

The SDMC chairman also urged the public to refrain from conducting any open burning, especially in areas prone to fires, to prevent further outbreaks. — DayakDaily
