MIRI, May 10: With investments surpassing RM125 billion and more than 53,000 job opportunities created, the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) has become a major driver of Sarawak’s economic transformation and growth.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said SCORE is more than just an economic initiative — it is a symbol of the people’s progress and a catalyst for a more prosperous and inclusive future for the state.

“SCORE reflects the success of close cooperation between the Sarawak and federal governments in uplifting rural areas through a people-centric development approach,” he said in a speech delivered by Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, during the Bakti Madani Miri 2025: Sarawak Maju Makmur Programme at the Miri Indoor Stadium today.

He highlighted the rapid development of the Samalaju Industrial Park, which began as a ‘greenfield’ site and has since grown into a high-tech hub for heavy industries.

Through the Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda), three regional agencies — the Highland Development Agency (HDA), the Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA), and the Ulu Rajang Development Agency (URDA) — have collectively received RM4.5 billion in funding to implement 247 infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, and essential utilities for interior communities.

“Mega projects such as the Miri-Marudi Road, the new Lawas Airport and access to the Baleh Hydroelectric Dam underscore our determination to unlock rural potential, in alignment with the aspirations of PCDS 2030,” he said.

In addition, the Premier announced new initiatives aimed at improving the people’s well-being, including free higher education at Sarawak-owned institutions starting in 2026, the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) for over 850,000 households, and free healthcare access through the Senior Citizens Health Benefit (SCHB) scheme.

“We want the wealth generated by this region to benefit our people. With State revenue projected to exceed RM14 billion in 2024, we are financially equipped to care for the rakyat, especially those in the lower income B40 group,” he said.

The three-day programme featured career expos, Rahmah sales, concerts, and a host of community-focused activities, attracting tens of thousands of visitors from across Sarawak and neighbouring countries, including Brunei Darussalam.

A special ceremony was also held to present RM10,500 each under the People’s Welfare Insurance Scheme (SIKR) 2.0 to eight families of flood and landslide victims in Miri, along with RM300 worth of food baskets.

Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister of Tourism Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Deputy Minister of Women and Children Development Datuk Rosey Yunus, and several other State and federal leaders attended the event.

Also present were Recoda chief executive officer and chairman of the Bakti Madani Miri 2025: Sarawak Maju Makmur SCORE Programme organising committee, Datuk Ismawi Ismuni, Miri Division Resident Galong Luang, and other distinguished guests. — DayakDaily
