Sarikei needs vocational college, says Repok rep

Sarawak Legislative Assembly Sitting, November 2017

KUCHING, Nov 13: Repok assemblyman Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii has called on the state government to consider building a vocational college in Sarikei.

Debating the state budget today, Huang said in today’s technology-driven digital era, technical and vocational skills are in high demand; hence, many parents have opened their minds and enrolled their children in technical schools.

“Unfortunately, many parents had to send their children to further their studies outside Sarikei as there are no such facilities in Sarikei. It is burdensome and a hassle for them especially those from low to medium income families,” he said.

Huang also request for the government to consider building a stadium and a town square in Sarikei to ease the problems of organising large-scale programmes, such as sports events, leisure activities and public gatherings.

Currently, there is only a civic centre with a capacity of about 1,000 people and an aged sports hall.

“With the availability and facilities of a proper stadium and town square, it will not only facilitate the design and planning of large-scale programmes or activities held in Sarikei but it will also help promote and contribute towards the improvement of socio-economic wellbeing in Sarikei,” Huang said. — DayakDaily
