Govt has approved RM100 million for 114 flood mitigation projects

KUCHING, 13 Nov: The state government, through the Rural Transformation Initiative has approved 114 state flood mitigation projects with a ceiling of RM100 million.

Speaking at the state legislative assembly session today, Marudi assemblyman Datu Dr Penguang Manggil said out of that figure, 97 projects worth RM45.78 million are being implemented in 2017, and 63 projects will be completed within the year while the rest will continue in 2018.

Meanwhile, under the State Rural Transformation Project (RTP), 116 projects related to flood mitigation with a total allocation of RM25.04 million has been approved and is now being implemented.

“In addition to the above, the federal Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government has allocated RM7.02 million while the federal Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has approved RM27.55 million to state local authorities to implement flood mitigation projects,” Penguang said.

Among the high impact projects implemented under the above initiatives is the RM6 million Padang Merdeka flood mitigation project which is now in Phase 3, which includes the construction of a new drainage outlet for storm water discharge.

Another project is the RM3.28 million drainage improvement at Jalan Green which to date is 90 per cent complete. Among the scope of works are a block stone retaining wall with a total length of 50.50 metres and 1.5-metre twin class Z concrete pipe jacking with total length of 54 metres. — DayakDaily
