KUCHING, Nov 18: Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (Tropi) will utilise sago palm in a peatland restoration programme.

According to Sarawak Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD) Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, the role of sago palm in stabilising carbon pools and reducing carbon emissions is in line with Malaysia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target to reduce the carbon intensity by 45 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030.

He said that additionally, restored peatlands act as important carbon sinks, directly supporting Malaysia’s commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Sagah said this in his ministerial winding-up speech during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting here today.

He added that Tropi will be working together with SD Guthrie in Bintulu Division for the programme. — DayakDaily
