MIRI, Nov 2: The Unity Bridge at Bulatan Park, engraved with ‘Apa Khabar?’ (How are you?) in 71 ethnic languages, has earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records, celebrating Sarawak’s rich cultural diversity.
Officially named Titian Perpaduan, the bridge’s unique design is inspired by traditional bamboo bridges found across rural Borneo, embodying the spirit of ‘Segulai Sejalai’ (Together in Unity) that defines Sarawak’s communities.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg inaugurated the bridge today at Bulatan Park.
According to a report by TVS, Taste of Borneo Cultural Carnival 3.0 2024 chairman Harry Lee Tian Song expressed deep pride in Sarawak’s ethnic and linguistic heritage.
“This bridge symbolises collaboration among all ethnic groups, showcasing true unity in diversity across cultures, religions, and languages.
“We — the Malays, Chinese, Iban, Orang Ulu, and others — are united, working together to achieve something meaningful,” he said.
Lee highlighted that under Abang Johari’s leadership, Sarawak stands as the only region in Malaysia truly embodying unity in diversity.
“Today’s event is a testament to that unity as we stand shoulder to shoulder, working together to make it a success,” he added in his speech at the ceremony.
The Unity Bridge not only symbolises the overcoming of divides that once separated riverside communities but also serves as a lasting emblem of strength in unity through diversity.
Designed and constructed in just six months, the bridge is now under the care of the Miri City Council.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Art Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon and MCC Mayor Adam Yii were among those present. — DayakDaily
