KUCHING, Dec 28: The Society of Private Medical Practitioners Sarawak has called for an urgent revision of general practitioner (GP) consultation fees, which have remained unchanged for over two decades.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) news report last night (Dec 27), the society said that the stagnant rate threatens the sustainability of private clinics and the quality of primary healthcare services in Malaysia.
The society’s president, Dr Liew Shan Fap, highlighted the critical need for change during the society’s 50th golden anniversary dinner last night (Dec 27).
“We strongly urge the Ministry of Health to revise and update the GP consultation fee schedule as soon as possible.
“This will ensure fair remuneration for doctors and the long-term sustainability of primary care services,” he said.
He noted that the GP consultation fee schedule, last updated in 2002 and embedded in the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act in 2006, requires immediate attention as it is outdated.
Dr Liew also underscored the vital role of private healthcare in Malaysia’s healthcare system, emphasising that private clinics and hospitals are appreciated for their efficiency, continuity of care, and strong, trusted relationships between doctors and patients.
He stressed that maintaining affordability and accessibility in private healthcare ensures these advantages continue.
He shared data from 2021, revealing that Malaysia’s total healthcare expenditures amounted to RM78.2 billion, representing 5.1 per cent of the nation’s GDP.
Of this, 42.1 per cent (RM32.9 billion) was privately funded through out-of-pocket payments, insurance, and employer contributions.
“By keeping our services affordable, we not only make healthcare accessible but also reduce the strain on public healthcare facilities.
“This contributes significantly to a healthier and more resilient Sarawak and Malaysia,” Dr Liew added.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Malaysian Medical Association president Dato Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira, Malaysian Medical Association Sarawak chairman Dr Ong Eng-Joe were also present at the event. — DayakDaily
