KUCHING, Sept 21: Sarawak will play a leading role in the transformation of Malaysia’s energy landscape, with a particular focus on the advancement of hydrogen economy and technology as it is currently the only State in Malaysia that has fully embraced these pioneering developments.
Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Chang Lih Kang acknowledged Sarawak for not only being the best but also leading the charge in Malaysia when it comes to hydrogen economy and technology.
“Mosti (Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation) wants to learn from the best, which is why we are here today to see for ourselves the progress of the first integrated refueling station,” he told reporters during a visit to Petros Multifuel Station at Jalan Tun Salahuddin here today.
Chang further highlighted that the Federal government is on the verge of launching the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR) which would act as a catalyst for the creation of a robust hydrogen economy in Malaysia, potentially generating an impressive RM12.1 billion in revenue for the country.
“It aims to ensure that the hydrogen sector contributes between RM49 billion to RM61 billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Malaysia by the year 2030,” he elaborated.
Under the Madani government, Chang said focus is being given on fostering high growth, high value industries and technologies, with hydrogen prominently features among them.
He noted that Sarawak has taken the lead in hydrogen utilisation, with a plant being established, powering public transportation, including buses and the upcoming autonomous rapid transit (ART) vehicle, and additionally, Sarawak boasts the presence of hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai vehicles.
“Sarawak is the first as these are not available in Peninsular Malaysia yet. As such, Sarawak will play a vital role in advancing the hydrogen economy in Malaysia.
“With hydrogen increasingly being recognised as a green and renewable source, the aim is to mainstream its use, especially in public transportation, which we believe will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emission in the environment,” he added.
The Petros Multifuel Station, operated by SEDC Energy, stands as a cutting-edge facility catering to a wide spectrum of energy needs.
It offers not only conventional fuels but also electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and, notably, Sarawak’s first public hydrogen filling station, set to become operational in the near future. — DayakDaily
